White Fillings In Novi, Michigan
Serving Ann Arbor and the Metro Detroit area
What are white fillings?
"White fillings" is another name for porcelain fillings, metal-free fillings, tooth colored fillings, or composite fillings. They are used in place of metal amalgam fillings to treat cavities or decayed teeth.
What are the advantages of white or tooth colored fillings?
- White fillings can be matched to the color of your teeth and are therefore more natural looking than metal amalgam fillings. Metallic fillings, in fact, often turn black with age and are easy to see inside your mouth.
- White fillings can stabilize and actually strengthen your teeth.
- Since white fillings do not conduct temperature as easily as metallic fillings, they make your treated teeth less sensitive after treatment. Since they also expand and contract less in extreme temperatures, white fillings are less likely to subsequently weaken or fracture your teeth.
- Composite white fillings harden much more quickly than metallic fillings.
Am I a good candidate for white fillings?
You may be a good candidate if you have tooth decay, a cavity, or existing metal amalgam fillings. Dr. Serra can help you determine if you are a good candidate for white fillings in your free initial consultation.
Can I replace my old metal fillings if they are not falling out?
Not only is it possible to replace your old metal fillings, you may wish to do so even if they are still secure. Old metal fillings cause a significant amount of the damage that requires adults to visit their dentist nowadays. Metal amalgam fillings have insecure edges, may weaken or fracture your teeth and can allow bacteria to grow between your tooth and the filling, causing further decay. Because white fillings are bonded to your teeth, this bacterial growth is highly unlikely. By replacing your old fillings with white fillings, you will also improve your smile by making your fillings virtually unnoticeable.
What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are sometimes used for larger cavities. They are created out of porcelain in a laboratory to perfectly fit in a contoured (prepared) cavity. They are not as frequently used anymore because for their added expense and the inconvenience of more than one visit to their office, cosmetic dentists will generally opt for a "full coverage" solution such as porcelain crowns or more aesthetic solutions like porcelain veneers.
