What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint syndrome, although it is also referred to as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. It is caused by a misalignment of the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connect the lower jaw to the skull. Over time, this misalignment leads to a multitude of painful TMJ symptoms including jaw popping, jaw and tooth pain, headaches, migraines, neck and shoulder discomfort, and ringing of the ears.

Who gets TMJ / TMD?

Although anyone can experience neuromuscular problems such as TMJ, those born with misaligned teeth or a poor jaw position tend to experience TMJ symptoms in their teen years. Those with a history of grinding their teeth tend to start experiencing symptoms in their early to mid-40s. Others develop symptoms as a result of loosing or breaking teeth, or from old fillings.

How is TMJ diagnosed?

There is a multitude of diagnostics, which include jaw measurements, x-rays, and computer modeling of your jaw structure. Only a neuromuscular dentist can properly diagnose TMJ.

How is TMJ treated?

Treatment may include clear braces, custom-made mouth guards, full mouth restoration (also known as a smile makeover), or surgery. Treatment will depend on the gravity of your condition.

What does full mouth restoration or smile makeover entail?

Full mouth restoration involves any number of cosmetic dentistry techniques that result in each tooth having the proper length, shape and position so that the jaw is at rest in its previously determined optimal position.

Who can treat TMJ?

Only a properly trained neuromuscular dentist, such as one trained (or teaching, like Dr. Serra) at The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, should treat the condition.

If you experience TMJ symptoms, you should consult with an experienced neuromuscular dentist. This is particularly important in light of the fact that untreated TMJ can worsen and that many of its symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed.
