What is a porcelain teeth crown?
Porcelain teeth crowns are used on teeth that are worn, cracked, or broken due to old age, decay, old fillings, or a misaligned bite. Porcelain crowns are permanently bonded over the top, visible portion of the tooth for additional strength of the tooth's structure and to become a new outer surface of the tooth. Porcelain crowns can also be bonded to the teeth on either side or with a bridge to replace a missing tooth.
Compared with metal crowns, which are still in use today, porcelain teeth crowns require less removal of healthy tooth structure for proper placement. Due to the smooth, translucent properties of porcelain, porcelain crowns are also more natural in texture and appearance.
What is the process involved in placing a teeth crown?
The damaged tooth is reshaped so that the teeth crown can fit over it. An impression is then taken of your teeth and gums and is sent to a laboratory where the porcelain crown is made. While the crown is fabricated, a temporary crown is fitted over your tooth. When the permanent teeth crown is ready, Dr. Serra will remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent one onto your tooth.
Can old, less natural looking crowns be replaced?
Certainly. Old crowns that do not look natural or were done improperly can be replaced with all porcelain teeth crowns that will look natural if placed expertly by an experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Serra.
How is the color chosen for porcelain teeth crowns?
You may choose to lighten your natural teeth before choosing a color for your crown. Bear in mind that not all of your natural teeth are the same color. To create natural looking teeth, an experienced cosmetic dentist should consider complexion, face structure, hair color, body type, height, and even eye color in addition to subtle variances in your teeth's shading!
Why do some porcelain crowns have a dark edge at the gum line?
This does not happen with all-porcelain crowns. The dark edge is probably the metal border of a porcelain fused to metal crown. Dr. Serra uses all-porcelain crowns, which provide the same strength as porcelain fused to metal crowns, but are nearly indistinguishable from the rest of your natural teeth.
How much do porcelain teeth crowns cost?
The cost of a porcelain crowns vary depending on your particular needs. Dr. Serra's office will work with you to find a payment plan you can be comfortable with.
